If you are intrigued by buildings and architecture, a
career as an architect may be a wonderful career option for
you. Architects create, design, and construct the fabulous
buildings that are an integral part of our lives.
Architects are people that not only have a large amount of
creativity and imagination, but a tremendous amount of
technical knowledge as well. Training as an architect is a
long process requiring extensive education but the results
are well worth it.
Training for a career as an architect requires several
years in a University program. If you plan to have a
career as architect within the United States most states
require a five year training program at the University
level. It's difficult to jump into architecture right
after high school. Architecture isn't usually discussed as
a possible career choice by high school guidance
counselors.
Some people want to do something creative after working in
their chosen profession for some time. For example an
engineer after working for few years as a civil engineer may
desire to do something creative. You can also divert from
your present education after verifying the individual
requirement of various schools. It is advisable to consult
your counsellor.
To become a licensed architect there are some requirements
to be fulfilled. After you have completed the essential
training of architecture, you have to appear for
Architecture Registration Examination, wherein you have to
pass eight architecture specific examinations. You will also
require gaining eight years of experience.
These requirements are only for potential licensed
architects in the United States and every country has their
own regulations that must be followed. In each country there
is also typically a governing board that gives their members
support and keeps them up to date on current events relating
to the field of architecture.
As you can see, becoming an architect requires a commitment
and a great deal of hard work. This may not be the career
goal for someone who is even slightly unsure about what
they really want to do. A career as an architect can be a
very satisfying and rewarding, but it has its difficult
moments like any job.
Once you are a licensed architect you can decide which area
of architecture you are interested in. You may want to work
for a firm that designs sky scrapers to decorate the city's
skyline or perhaps you are interested in building unique
homes. There are so many opportunities for the aspiring
architect that you'll want to experiment in several
different areas before limiting yourself to one choice.
Many architects are involved in non-profit organizations
that work towards making cities more livable and finding
creative ways to use indigenous materials for safe housing.
Many architects find this a satisfying way to give back to
the community.
People already working may be looking for an interesting and
rewarding career. Others may be attracted to the sciences
and arts and this profession provides ample opportunity to
link both these subjects and satisfy both sides of your
brain. Very few students out of school would aspire to
become and architect. It is advisable to find out about the
courses available in your college or university.
