Going camping? Make sure you are properly equipped before
embarking on your adventure. Don't compromise on the
equipment, like others have, when there is'sno need to.
Look at your location
Find out about the weather conditions and temperatures of
your intended destination. You may want to avoid going to
certain areas during months when temperatures there are
uncomfortably high.
Of course, learning about the weather only helps if Mother
Nature doesn't decide to change her mind when you're out.
It never hurts to plan for her worst.
Water-The Camper's best friend.
Don't'tcompromise on the quantity of water that you carry,
as many greenhorns tend to do. The benefits of carrying
enough water far outweigh the inconvenience of lugging the
extra weight.
A very bad idea!
You want to bring at least a gallon of water per person per
day that you will be camping. Yes, this will be heavy, but
it's a lot heavier to carry someone to safety should they
get dehydrated.
Besides water, you may also want to carry some sports
drinks. They contain water and electrolytic salts that
replenish those lost by your body in hot weather.
Alternatively, you can buy electrolytic salts in powder form
and mix them with water before drinking.
Mmm! Tastes good too!
Nourish your body
You may lose your appetite in the heat but it is important
to keep eating so that your body'sbalance is maintained. In
extreme weather, your body can lose valuable electrolytes
that can only be replaced by proper nourishment.
Nibble on something every time you take a swig of water. A
couple of nuts or pretzels will suffice. A salty or sugary
snack is best.
The right gear
A good visor or hat to keep your head cool is a good idea
in the warmer camping weather. You will also want to wear
clothes that are lighter in color as well as put sunscreen
on the areas that are exposed to the sun.
You will have enough to cope with without having to deal
with a nasty case of sunburn!
Carrying some communication equipment is vital -- just in
case you have to radio or call for assistance. And
all-too-important, a well-stocked first aid kit is a must.
Bring a friend
To get the most out of your camping trip share the
experience with a good friend. You won't'tregret it!
